Casa de campo à venda - A fortified 16th century estate in need of restoration, with accommodation, mill and outbuildings on the banks of the river Arroux near Autun in Burgundy. Château d'Igornay stands on the east bank of the River Arroux, on what was once a small island in the middle of the river. Visible from the road, it is accessible from the south, while the village has developed on the opposite bank. This medieval fortress, first mentioned in 1122 by Robert d'Igornay, has a unique horseshoe-shaped layout around an oval courtyard. The original plan, as shown on the 1827 land register, shows an oval shape initially flanked by seven towers. Three of them remain today, with a main building and curtain walls. To the south-east, a 15th-century square tower is graced with a corbelled brick hoarding supported by triple projecting brackets. The ground floor is pierced by gunports, while the first floor has two flanking gunports and a transom window. To the south-west, an older half-moon tower, which has been converted into a house, still has a window with voussoirs. The north tower, built on in a horseshoe shape, has preserved its archways, prismatic chimneys and a door lintel decorated with the Sercey coat of arms. Partially preserved moats measuring 8-20 metres wide completed the defensive system. The château's main entrance was once to the east, facing the village and church, as evidenced by the imposing stone blocks that still stand today. The mill at Igornay, built on the banks of the River Arroux, remained in operation until 1976. The château's history is punctuated by a number of noteworthy events. In 1313, Hugues, Duke of Burgundy, already mentioned the 'fortified house of Ygornay'. In 1440, Guillaume de Sercey, Lord of Igornay, had the parish church consecrated by the Bishop of Bethlehem and the Cardinal of Autun. In 1461, the fortress was repaired by the parishioners. The château then passed through the hands of several illustrious families, before undergoing more recent divisions.
