The house is in Vibrac, a small village on the banks of the river Charente which dates back many centuries. The village even has its own ruined chateau! Vibrac is in the centre of cognac country, the surrounding vineyards grow the grapes which are the source of the eau de vie that is used in creating one of France’s main exports, cognac. Vibrac lies just a few kilometres south of the N141 which runs between Jarnac and Angoulême, where you can join up with the N10 and ultimately the A10 motorway between Bordeaux and Paris. The main Sncf railway station for Tgv services run from Angoulême and the local railway station of Chateauneuf sur Charente (6 kms away) has a regular train service to and from the city.
When we bought our house in Vibrac in 2008, it had a mezzanine bedroom above the living room. As we are now in our early sixties, we find the staircase to the mezzanine inconvenient and now use the mezzanine space for storage. Just over two years ago, we had a local company build an extension for a bedroom using part of our courtyard and we have enjoyed that extra space very much. Our courtyard is still large enough to sit out and enjoy the sunshine or eat al fresco. Shortly after we bought the house, we installed an Orange France (France Telecom) main phone line and we have an Orange France wifi broadband internet connection, giving a great connection speed. Although we no longer use a Tv in our house, there is an antenna connection wired down in to the house from an aerial point high on the wall outside, suitable for a satellite dish or television aerial, it’s wired for both. Our satellite dish is still stored in the loft space of the house and can be used to receive a signal if it is reconnected.
A couple of years back, the village Mairie (the Town Hall) issued information that the entire village was changing over to a mains sewerage system and construction began on a purification plant to service our village of Vibrac and our neighbouring village, St Simon. Over the last year or so, we have carried out the final plumbing parts of the installation in our house of the “tout-à-l’égout” (mains sewerage) therefore our fosse étanche (septic tank) is no longer required, nor is the annual emptying out ritual necessary!
The village has a Co-op van which comes around twice a week and there are two Boulangerie (Bakers) vans every morning. If you place an order with the Boulangerie in Bassac, they will come along the lane with their little van and leave your baguette or pain in your cotton bread bag which you hang on the gate. Yes, it’s that easy to get fresh French bread every breakfast time! A recent development is that a bread dispenser has been installed in the church square around the corner from us, and the bread is actually very good. It is filled every morning around 7.30am by the local baker from Chateauneuf.
The nearest supermarkets are in Chateauneuf sur Charente which is 6 kms along the road – a small Intermarché next to railway station including petrol and a huge Super U supermarket on the outskirts of Chateauneuf sur Charente also including petrol and car wash and this is around 7kms from Vibrac. Vibrac is about a fifteen minute drive from Jarnac which is home to the headquarters of Courvoisier Cognac.
