Property summary
Locally referred to as the château, the main house was reconstructed in the late 18th century in the style of a country manor house, by a nobleman from Bordeaux.
The property, which originally included 450 acres, has only been sold twice in it's history. It occupies a commanding, elevated and ancient site alongside a probable roman road leading to the commanderie at Ayen, and a pilgrimage route.
Today there is very easy access from the A20 and A89 autoroutes and multiple airports. There is also a mainline train service to Paris.
In addition to the house a modern, steel framed, enclosed dry barn is included. This huge building would be ideal for a classic car collector, or as a manufacturing unit - the possibilities are endless.
There are also more traditional dependencies including a stone barn, and a separate stone cottage for restoration, with a new roof.
The house has an extremely practical layout, and would ideally suit a large family, and at present is used as a B&B, or could be a small country house hotel. The accommodation includes four elegant reception rooms (including a wood paneled study), some with French windows opening out to the gardens, and a large modern kitchen.
Below, of course, is a wine cellar, that contained a thousand bottles in 1999 (of which none were drinkable).
On the first floor are six large bedrooms, and three bathrooms (two en suite).
The second floor was never completed, perhaps as the house was finished just before the revolution in 1789, but floors, windows and some internal walls are complete. This floor could potentially offer the same accommodation as the first floor, but with soaring ceiling highs in the central section.
The north and south wings have twin third floor attics with very beautiful roof construction. One was last used as an owl loft. Further work on the property as seen.
The gardens extend to around an hectare, with an area of woodland nearby. Care has been taken taken with the laid back gardens typical of a country house by the current owners, and previous custodians, and they are extraordinarily beautiful and interesting.
The current owners have lived at the property for twenty years full time as their family home and have enjoyed it to the full, but wish to downsize.
