About
Ref.4490 : French manor to be restored in Pays de la Loire (Mayenne deparmtent).
Situated in the Craonnais region, on the borders of Maine and Anjou, this former 12th-century priory is nestled in a small valley, close to a peaceful stream. Laval (Tgv station) is around forty kilometres away, Paris 320 km.
The surrounding countryside is wooded and hedged.
There are also a number of tourist attractions in the vicinity, including a communal forest and a water sports centre for outdoor activities.
A small resource town is just a few kilometres away.

Craon, some ten kilometres away, is a town of 4,500 souls located in the southern and western part of the Mayenne, in the Haut-Anjou region. It was originally a medieval fortress that protected the Breton border with its 1,600 m of walls. The last remnants of the ramparts disappeared in 1820. Today, you can still admire Craon's covered market, built in 1850 (listed as a Historic Monument), which bears witness to the town's rich economic past, as well as its castle.
Many other sites offering a wide range of activities are less than 20 minutes away, including the Robert Tatin Museum, the Refuge de l'Arche and the Mayenne Valley.

Built in the 12th century, this former priory or Celle grandmontaine' consists of a main building with a wing in the centre, set at right angles to it.
This large building was probably the monks' refectory, the cellars and formed the cloister to the south and east. The rest of the cloister was enclosed by the nave of the church. The cloister was destroyed around 1700, as was the church in the 19th century.

The remaining building is made of rubble stone and decorated with tufa and a local stone: roussard sandstone. This ferruginous stone, with its orange hues, was used to design the channelling and contours of the openings in the building.
The variety of openings testifies to the different construction periods of this residence, which has survived the centuries.
Facing east/west, the building has a floor surface area of approx. 260 m² (2,660 sq ft).

Gradually abandoned following the French Revolution, the current owners were able to undertake the work required to fully restore this monument.
From now on, this property will appeal to a buyer keen to breathe new life into this building, which bears witness to its rich history stretching back thousands of years. Numerous sources and research studies trace the building's history through the centuries.

Set around the main building, the outbuildings include :
A/ A large stable building, built in the 19th century from the stones and on the site of the former church it comprises 2 rooms (48 and 35 m² / 48 and 95 sq ft) as well as a large 140 m² (1,507 sq ft) room that could be converted into a reception room the building is extended by former pigsties
B/ A former dwelling adjoining the main building
C/ Various ruined buildings.
D/ A well.

The land, made up of courtyards, grassland and fallow land, stretches around the priory in the centre. To the south flows a peaceful river. The estate forms a harmonious whole, with a total surface area of 3.41 acres (1 ha 38 a 42 ca).

The priory is protected as a historic monument: listed by decree on 3 October 1988.
This property is a historic monument (allowing fiscal tax cuts if you pay taxes in France).
