Double wrought iron gates to a sloping gravelled parking space and thence to the quiet country lane. High hedges surround the whole garden. There are cuckoos, swallows, woodpeckers, owls and bats. Tiny lizards scurry about.
The back garden can be accessed at either side of the house – there is a meadow over the fence at the non-road side. At the gate side is an attached solid woodstore/large shed, big enough for cycle storage, and water butt. The honeysuckle hedge is popular with hummingbird moths.
The (west-facing, sunset-facing) rear garden has a substantial flagged patio area straight out of the house and surrounding the pool. A covered eating area provides pool and garden views. High hedges ensure total privacy. A superb ash tree provides shade. There’S a gravelled sitting area at the far side, a metal garden shed that's large enough for lawnmower, pool loungers etc, and a fenced off “wild bit” that was once a veg garden. A rear gate leads down wooden steps to a rear parking area (water, power) and another quiet lane.
It's an excellent place to be on holiday. Parthenay has excellent shopping, and a few big stores on its peripherique, including a big well-stocked Leclerc. The village is about half way between Parthenay and Bressuire, and only a ten minute or so drive to the beautiful riverside village of St Loup, with its excellent restaurant (the historic abbey village of Airvault is just beyond, and its Intermarché and garden centre). A huge lake nearby is good for walks and sail boat rental. The river at St Loup offers kayak rental. It’S only a ten minute car ride to the lovely village of Gourgé and another very nice country restaurant.
We’Re only an hour’s drive south of the Loire and make frequent trips to Saumur to stock up with bottles from all the great wineries there. Other great day trips include: seafood and shopping at La Rochelle, the huge network of canals in the Marais Poitevin, Puy de Fou and Futuroscope. We love Poitiers, its history and character and great shopping and eating. Nantes is easily accessible, for a big city fix. (Airports at Nantes, Poitiers, La Rochelle. The rail network is also easily accessed.) It takes us three and a half hours to drive to the house from the Caen ferry port.
As it’s a holiday house for us we are not there all the time to conduct viewings. We will help if we can!
