- The former Islettes earthernware factory classed as a historic monument, with 7 hectares of meadows in the Champagne region. The Bois d'Épense factory, known as 'Des Islettes' was the biggest of the Argonne earthenware factories, especially among those producing artistic earthenware. The date it was built can't be determined exactly, but there are records of it as far back as 1737. From 1756, it was passed down from father to son by the Bernard dynasty for almost a century. At the time, it was very large, employing over 300 workers a year. The variety of themes is extraordinary, and may come as a surprise to enthusiasts who had no idea that such masterpieces and rarities were being produced in Les Islettes at the time. When Bernard's last son, Joseph-Désiré, died, his widow kept the business going for eight years and then sold it to the Godechel brothers in 1840. It was facing stiff competition from factories in Lunéville and Sarreguemine, which are delivering more sophisticated, modern and cheaper products. The factory closed in 1848. When it was sold, the buildings were demolished, leaving only the master's house, the employees' accommodation, the chapel and a few outbuildings. After a small tarmac road leading out of the village, the property is approached via a path running alongside the chapel and after passing through a wrought iron gate, framed by heavy stone pilasters topped with acorns. A vast gravel courtyard provides parking for a large number of vehicles. Flowerbeds and large trees form a backdrop to it. All of the buildings are set in a row to its left, starting with the country manor, followed by staff accommodation and outbuildings, and a few metres after a vast woodshed. The grounds stretch out all around, with a wooded area with a small dacha on stilts built in the 20th century near a natural pond fed intermittently by a spring, a remarkable oak tree at the edge of the meadows, and a vegetable garden near the outbuildings. Finally, at the rear of the manor house, a porch overlooks a white pebbled terrace.

An offer has just been accepted by the owner. This property is therefore no longer available. We still suggest you send us your contact information so we can keep you informed of any changes and receive our latest news. After crossing the Saulx River and entering the island, the grand avenue of century-old plane trees leads, through views of extraordinary charm and romanticism, to a pair of majestic pillars topped with sphinxes marking the entrance to the courtyard, facing a grand avenue leading to a monumental column in the distance. This square-plan courtyard is arranged by two corner pavilions facing the château, formed by a central block on the ground floor under Mansard-style broken attics between two corner pavilions. Symmetrical in appearance, it is marked in its center by a monumental portico of classical architecture with four pilasters under a large pediment, adorned with exceptionally high-quality sculpture. The semicircular bays are topped with different mascarons directly inspired by the Palace of Versailles. The central mascaron depicting Hercules echoes the mascaron on the fireplace in the Salon d'Hercules by Robert de Cotte, topped by a weapon trophy formed by a mace and a quiver (between 1712 and 1736). The other mascarons of Flora, Ceres, Bacchus, and Poseidon are all inspired by the Salon de la Guerre, begun by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1678 and completed by Charles Lebrun in 1686. The château, apparently completed in 1741, is a direct reproduction of this decorative program, which is quite exceptional and deserves a more complete study. Severely damaged during the First World War, the property was completely restored, presumably by André Champetier de Ribes around 1925 (oral source, to be verified). On the ground floor, with a 4.5m ceiling, there is a hall, a grand balustraded staircase, a beautiful library with Directoire-style woodwork, and a marble fireplace. A living room with a marble fireplace and an 18th-century trumeau. A kitchen. A large hallway. A large kitchen with a terracotta tiled floor, a vegetable garden, a stone fireplace, and a fireback with a coat of arms. A very beautiful dining room with wood-panelled cupboards, terracotta tiles, 18th-century tiled stoves, marble window sills, and large 17th-18th-century painted canvases set into the woodwork. Large double doors, a large 50m² living room with a 5.3m ceiling, sumptuous Rocaille trellis decor, through, six French doors opening onto the courtyard and a large wrought iron balcony overlooking the moat and a beautiful view across the park marked by two sphinxes, a fireplace and a very large carved limestone trumeau, four double interior doors. Living room, marble fireplace, wooden trumeau, low paneling, 19th-century stenciled wallpaper, Versailles parquet flooring. Five bedrooms, most with marble fireplaces, one with an alcove. A kitchen. Upstairs in one corner of the main building, three bedrooms. A very large attic. Upstairs in the other corner of the main building, two bedrooms, a bathroom, a workshop with a superb Regency stone fireplace and its trumeau. A huge attic in the central building. In the independent West Pavilion, with its cracked and fragile structure, there is a kitchen, a stone fireplace, a beautifully decorated living/dining room, a tiled stove, 19th-century wallpaper, a very large 18th-century marble fireplace, a neoclassical library, plaster vases, a bedroom with a stone fireplace, a powder room, and four bedrooms upstairs. In the South Pavilion, there is a large chapel, a sacristy, and a room in the corner tower. The roof and framework are recent and in good condition. A beautiful courtyard with pollarded trees, box and yew topiary, large pillars, stone lions, flame-shaped ironwork, sphinxes, and double-flight staircases leading to the moat. A large stone bridge. Very large, century-old plane trees. Outbuildings: a guardhouse, garage, kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms. Walled vegetable garden. Three large car garages. Driveway, funerary monument. Large outbuildings, stables, box stalls, a shed, a three-room apartment, and a large and beautiful greenhouse-orangery opening onto the vegetable garden. A 20th-century brick mill awaits complete restoration along the Saulx River. It includes an engine room, turbine, pontoon, kitchen, three bedrooms, and a large attic. The water rights are legally established. The roof needs to be redone. Historic Monument Protection: The château's facades and roofs (main building and pavilions), its site, the entrance gate with its lions, the masonry of the curtain walls, the west staircase and the two sphinxes guarding it, the moats and the access bridge, as well as the interior decoration of the great hall: listed by decree of November 28, 2011.
