The Village of Argeliers
Argeliers is situated along the canal du midi amongst the picturesque Languedoc vineyards and is 35 min from the Mediterranean beaches. The village is located at the foot of a small series of hills which are full of trails, walkways and beautiful views over the surrounding area. A short walk or cycle out of the village finds you in the midst of this very pretty area which is great for those who love the outdoors and hill walking or cycling. The village is centrally located between Carcasonne, Bezier and Narbonne. All amenities are within a few minutes walk from the front door, including a boulangerie, café bars, restaurants, a grocery store, local produce shops, newsagent, pharmacy, hair salons and a weekly market. Capestang (5 min) with lovely canal-side restaurants, shops and further café bar restaurants. Narbonne-Plage and Gruissan (35 min) for great Mediterranean beaches, traditional markets, café bar restaurants, water park and amusement parks. The nearby, beautiful Canal du Midi is a great respite from the busy beaches. Made famous recently by Rick Stein's Bbc Tv series, the canal offers miles of flat, tree-lined, shady footpaths with many waterside bars and restaurants. Narbonne 30 mins has an interesting gothic cathedral, medieval quarter and Roman remains, some good restaurants and a peaceful past, reflected in a serene town centre. Carcassonne 35 mins the most romantic medieval skyline anywhere and has great summer medieval festivals and spectacular evening firework displays. Corbières, where interesting and serious wine makers are now well-established and you can stop at towns lloungers ike Lagrasse, a really gorgeous place in the fold of a hill, unspoilt, medieval and facing a Benedictine monastery across a river. Everyone swims in a little lagoon looking up at the twelfth Century bridge. Cisterian Abbaye de Fontfroide with lovely rose garden and a good restaurant. The kayaking is wonderful in the Montagne Noire, pretty Victorian spa towns have wide and slow stretches of the Orb where tinies can bob about, and fast exciting stretches for the others. For serious 'white water' enthusiasts, there are good rivers in the Pyrénées, also about an hour away. Similarly, Figueires, the Dali Museum and Barcelona are all not far to the south. Each beach along the coast has a different flavour to it. Budget airlines fly into Montpellier (1 hour), Perpignan (1 hour), Carcassonne (35 mins), Nîmes and Toulouse (90 mins) and Barcelona (3 hours). Hypermarkets and excellent shopping in both Béziers and Narbonne. Cultural events and traditional markets. Historic Cathar trail with many castles to visit. The picturesque historic hilltop town of Minerve is around 15 minutes away. The Spanish border lies just 55 minutes away.
